Srinagar, Sep 14: Jammu and Kashmir has fully implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across school, college and higher education levels, Commissioner Secretary, School Education Department, Ram Niwas Sharma, said on Monday.
Sharma said J&K was among the earliest regions to implement NEP 2020, with the policy being rolled out across all levels of education.
He said the implementation has brought several changes to the education system, with greater focus on skill development, vocational education and preparing students for employment opportunities.
At the higher education level, the administration has introduced flagship initiatives including Design Your Degree and the four-year degree programme, he said.
At the school level, Balvatika 1, 2 and 3 have also been introduced under the new education framework, aimed at strengthening foundational learning among children.
“Beyond academics, our focus is on making students skillful,” Sharma said, highlighting the growing emphasis on practical and vocational education.
According to the Commissioner Secretary, around 1.40 lakh students are currently undergoing skill enhancement training in J&K. He said the initiative is aimed at equipping students with practical skills alongside their regular academic education.
More than 25 percent of courses in colleges and universities across J&K have now integrated vocational and skill-based education, marking a shift towards a more skill-oriented higher education system.
The NEP 2020 implementation is also aimed at giving students greater flexibility in education while linking learning with skills, employability and future career opportunities.
Sharma said the initiatives are part of the broader effort to transform education in J&K and ensure that students receive both academic knowledge and practical skills needed for their future.
