Jhansi: The Wagon Repair Workshop (WRW) here has been awarded the prestigious GreenCo Gold Rating, an elite environmental certificate by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), becoming the first and the only workshop in North Central Railway (NCR) to achieve the distinction for excellence in environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.As per chief workshop manager Ajay Srivastava, the recognition was formally presented to North Central Railway general manager Naresh Pal Singh at the zonal headquarters on Monday. Principal chief mechanical engineer Anil Kumar Dwivedi handed over the certificate during a special meeting attended by principal heads of departments of the zone. Dwivedi also briefed officials on the assessment process and the initiatives undertaken by the workshop that helped secure the rating.Congratulating the workshop team, Singh said the achievement reflected the organisation’s strong commitment to sustainable manufacturing and environmental conservation. He noted that the recognition would contribute to Indian Railways’ broader vision of becoming a greener transport system and support the Government of India’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.The GreenCo rating framework evaluates industrial units on a range of sustainability parameters, including energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energy adoption, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, recycling practices, green supply chains and environmentally friendly infrastructure.Srivastava said the Jhansi workshop’s performance was driven by a series of major green initiatives. A key highlight is the installation of a 5 MW rooftop solar power plant, the largest among all Indian Railways workshops and production units. The solar facility currently meets nearly 80 to 85 percent of the workshop’s electricity requirements.The workshop has also implemented extensive rainwater harvesting measures and achieved the goal of zero groundwater usage. Environmental conservation efforts have included the plantation of more than 5,000 trees and the development of a heritage park within the campus.In addition, the workshop has introduced several technological innovations aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability, including plasma cutting systems, automatic grease-filling machines, CBC lock indicator mechanisms, digital procurement systems and solar-powered guard vans.“The certification would further strengthen the workshop’s environmental commitments while encouraging continued innovation in sustainable industrial practices”, Srivastava said.
