Ambala: A day after violent clashes between police and Sikh protesters over the Aug 7 confrontation involving Ludhiana-based International Anti-Khalistan Terrorist Front head Gursimran Singh Mand, Ambala remained calm on Friday, even as Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj condemned the police action and called for an inquiry.Jathedar Gargajj questioned whether “mischievous elements” were sent to disrupt the peaceful protest and provoke force. Police had used tear gas and lathicharge to clear a blockade by Sikh protesters demanding the release of two youths arrested for the Aug 7 incident outside Gurdwara Panjokhra Sahib. Protesters allege Mand had struck a Sikh devotee with his vehicle, while Mand claimed he was assaulted.The Jathedar said govt should have avoided confrontation while talks were underway and criticised it for failing to take timely legal action following the confrontation.Police said force was used only after an armed mob attacked officers with swords and spears, claiming at least nine officers were injured, including a senior official who required surgery.On Friday, police registered two criminal cases against protesters for blocking highways, attacking officers and damaging public property. Those named include Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) president Jagdish Singh Jhinda, Akali Dal Waris Punjab De acting president Tarsem Singh and other Sikh functionaries. Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat said the FIRs included attempt-to-murder charges.Following a meeting of Sikh groups at the state Sikh body’s Gurdwara Patshahi Chhevin head office in Kurukshetra, Jhinda announced a panthic gathering in Pipli on Aug 25. He urged the community to observe Independence Day in protest, accusing police of launching a baton charge and tear gas attack just as protesters prepared to lift the blockade.Jhinda demanded the cancellation of all charges against Sikh youths and the immediate arrest of Mand and his son.Police said action was delayed to verify video footage but confirmed a case has been registered against Mand. Police said they remain open to peaceful dialogue while warning of strict action against further violence.
