Chandigarh: Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has written to Union home minister Amit Shah, seeking an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into what he alleged to be drug trafficking, gangsters and international arms networks operating in Punjab. In his letter, Jakhar referred to specific incidents, claiming they pointed to govt patronage of the illicit trade.Referring to the first incident, he wrote that 4 kg of heroin were seized from some individuals in 2023 in the jurisdiction of Nathana police station in Bathinda district. According to Jakhar, the investigation revealed that the heroin had been ordered by an accused named Harry, who was lodged in Ferozepur jail.Jakhar said Harry, who had been accused of murder, was serving a 20-year sentence and had seven other cases registered against him. He alleged that people in the Punjab govt, in collusion with the Fazilka SSP and DC, arranged parole for Harry in April 2024 and then helped him flee to Dubai.Jakhar alleged that Harry is now operating a network involved in drugs, extortion and gangster activity from Dubai, stretching from Abohar to Ludhiana, while the Punjab govt has closed his file.Citing another case, Jakhar wrote that Karam Singh, a constable with the Punjab govt’s anti-drone unit, had recently been arrested and that 25 kilograms of heroin had been recovered from him. He said Karam Singh had also disclosed that he had arranged another 24 similar deliveries.Jakhar alleged that those involved were bringing in not only heroin but also weapons from Pakistan. He said the incidents indicated that the trade in weapons and drugs with Pakistan was also linked to drug-related offences and extortion. He called for a time-bound NIA investigation into both incidents, saying that the arrival of weapons and drugs from Pakistan was a matter of national security. A thorough investigation, he said, could also identify other important people involved in the network.
