Nagpur: News of actor Mushtaq Khan’s death came as a shock to many in Nagpur, particularly residents of Jafar Nagar where he spent years of his early life. Those who knew him as a neighbour and saw him around the locality remembered him as a down-to-earth, warm and jolly person who never allowed stardom to come in the way of his connect with people.Khan was a resident of Mansha Chowk in Jafar Nagar and was among the first families to move into the area when it was still sparsely inhabited. His family sold their Nagpur home and shifted to Mumbai a couple of years ago.For local residents, having a popular actor as a neighbour was a matter of pride. “Even a glimpse of Khan would leave local residents and neighbours upbeat. It was something to boast about that a popular actor who featured in blockbuster films alongside big stars lived next door,” said Yunus Husain, a resident of Sabina Colony. “His death is devastating news for Nagpur.”Salim Javed Sheikh, who lived in the lane next to Khan’s house, recalled how easily the actor mingled with people. “Mushtaq saheb would often come to the masjid, shake hands with fans and sign autographs for children. He was very down to earth and never allowed his stardom to get the better of him,” he said.Maharashtra Minority Commission chairperson Pyare Khan also expressed grief over the actor’s death, recalling their personal association. “I have lost a dear friend and renowned artiste, Mushtaq Khan. The news of his passing has left me deeply saddened. Along with being a fine artiste, he was a cheerful and kind-hearted person. The passing of Mushtaq bhai is a personal loss for me. I will always cherish the memories and moments we shared. My heartfelt tribute to him.”
