Chikkamagaluru: An unidentified person broke into a house in Menasur village, Narasimharajapura taluk, and robbed a 72-year-old woman of her gold mangalsutra while she was asleep.Police suspect the involvement of someone known to the family and have started an investigation.According to the complaint, Lakshmidevi and her husband Ganapati, a retired teacher, had gone to bed around 10.30pm after dinner. Around 12.30 am, Lakshmidevi woke up when someone tried to pull her mangalsutra. She grabbed the chain tightly and raised an alarm. By the time her husband woke up, the accused had broken half the chain and fled from the back portion of the house. The family later heard the sound of a bike engine on the move coming from the front of the house, the complaint stated.After checking, the family found the intruder had removed roof tiles of the kitchen to gain entry into the house.Police said the stolen jewellery included 17g of a gold mangalsutra, valued at approximately Rs 1.7 lakh. As Lakshmidevi held on to the chain tightly, only a part of the chain was stolen.The couple, Lakshmidevi and Ganapati, live in the village house while their four children, including son Badrinath who works abroad, are married.A case has been registered at Narasimharajapura police station and investigation is on.
