Vadodara: A Vadodara consumer forum has ordered an insurance firm to pay claim amount to a complainant who underwent medical treatment for a severe stomach ache. The firm had rejected her claim, arguing that Bela Gandhi was in the hospital for diagnostic purposes.According to case details, Gandhi developed a severe stomach ache in March 2025 following which she was rushed to the hospital. She underwent treatment for four days and later filed an insurance claim at Niva Bupa Health Insurance Company Ltd of Rs 37,043 towards the medical expenses. The insurance firm, however rejected her claim, saying that the patient was admitted primarily for diagnostic and evaluation purposes, and hence the claim was not payable. Gandhi then filed a complaint with Vadodara District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (additional) in January this year and sought her claim amount along with Rs 10,000 for legal costs and Rs 25,000 for mental harassment. The complainant submitted all the documents and bills in the forum. The consumer commission observed that the discharge summary shows she underwent medical treatment in the hospital. “The forum said that the patient was administered fluid, injections and given medicines and hence she had undergone medical treatment,” said advocate Hardik Shah, who represented Gandhi. The commission ordered the insurer to pay Rs 37,043 to the complainant with eight per cent interest along with Rs 2,000 each for mental harassment and legal costs.
