Thiruvananthapuram: India’s first model ‘Disability Rehabilitation Village’, aimed at providing comprehensive rehabilitation and empowerment services for persons with disabilities, will come up at Puthanathani in Malappuram district. Social justice minister V E Abdul Gafoor will inaugurate the construction works on Monday.The foundation laying ceremony will be held at 10.30am at Chungam Ground, Puthanathani. The project is being implemented on five acres of land at Chungam in Kurumbathur village of Tirur taluk. The rehabilitation village is envisaged as a comprehensive facility providing services related to prevention of disabilities, early detection, timely intervention, treatment, rehabilitation, education, skill development, employment and socio-economic empowerment under one roof.The project aims to ensure the rights, welfare, social security, equal opportunities, self-reliance and dignified living of persons with disabilities. The social justice department has envisioned the facility as a model initiative that will promote the full social inclusion of persons with disabilities.
