Lucknow: India Chip Private Limited, a joint venture between HCL Technologies and Foxconn Technology Group, is setting up an OSAT facility in Noida with an investment of around Rs 3,700 crore to manufacture display driver chips used in smartphones, laptops, automobile systems and industrial electronics.A govt spokesperson said the plant, likely to be operational by 2028, will have a processing capacity of 20,000 wafers per month. The project is also expected to generate more than 3,500 direct and indirect jobs and is estimated to contribute nearly Rs 45,000 crore annually to the GDP. “This will be the country’s first Display Driver Integrated Circuit (DDIC) OSAT facility. Until now, India has had limited production capacity for DDIC chips used in mobile phones, televisions, laptops and automobile displays. With the establishment of this unit, India’s dependence on imports will reduce and domestic manufacturing will get a boost,” the official said.Under the project, centres of excellence, research laboratories and simulation labs will be established to promote innovation in chip design and testing. Special training programmes will also be conducted in collaboration with local universities and technical institutions to strengthen a skill-based industrial ecosystem in the state, the official added.
