Speaking at the AI Impact Summit, US House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence Policy Advisor Srinivas Krishna on Saturday said India can leverage American innovation to build artificial intelligence tools that directly benefit its citizens.
Speaking at a special session on the sidelines of the AI-India Impact Summit in New Delhi, Krishna described India as a “vibrant” democracy and highlighted the shared strengths of the two countries in technology and research.
“All the leading model companies are based in the US. It’s like you’ve built billions of dollars between this year and next year, that just keeps vertical on the GPUs, on advanced AI chips, Nvidia and TPUs are really the only game in town for everyone,” Krishna said. He added that while the US has advanced AI infrastructure, India can emerge as a key partner in applying AI for public good.
“I think the question is, how do you bring AI to make everyone the quality of life as citizens? And, for example, the way we are trying to do it, I just give you one example in education,” he said.
Krishna noted that AI applications can extend beyond sectors like healthcare and be embedded in broader civic systems. “When people talk about what a country like India should do, I think about how do you use AI leverage, all of this investment leverage, all of the innovation happening in America, which we think is the best in class, and then build, you know, the services, the tools, which you utilize for your citizens,” he added.
Referring to India’s AI Action Plan, Krishna outlined three focus areas: accelerating innovation, building AI infrastructure, and leading internationally in AI governance and policy.
He also emphasised the need for open scientific collaboration between the two countries. “We want to make sure we unlock the Cernis of the world, the open ways of the world, the blocks of the world, the anthropics of the world,” he said, underlining the importance of shared research and discovery.
Krishna pointed to the TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technologies) initiative as a framework to deepen US-India collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, biotechnology and space.
As part of future cooperation, he said both countries are working on a roadmap under the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), focusing on joint development in AI, semiconductor supply chains, defence technologies and advanced materials.
“So a lot of scientific discovery is going to change, and we are only getting started. So I think it’s time of great excitement, and I think all of us should feel lucky that we’re living through this,” Krishna said.
