The early deployment of central forces signals heightened preparedness by the Election Commission and could significantly shape the security environment in the run-up to the 2026 polls.
In an unprecedented move, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in West Bengal even before the formal declaration of the 2026 assembly elections. The commission has written to the West Bengal government in this regard, and News18 has accessed a copy of the letter.
This marks the first time that central forces will be deployed in the state prior to the official announcement of the election schedule.
480 CAPF Companies to Be Deployed
Following communication dated February 20, 2026, from the ECI, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ordered the deployment of 480 companies (coys) of CAPFs for the polls.
The deployment will take place in two phases:
Phase 1: By March 1, 2026: 240 Companies
CRPF: 110
BSF: 55
CISF: 21
ITBP: 27
SSB: 27
Of these, 110 companies are expected to reach West Bengal by March 1.
Phase 2: By March 10, 2026: 240 Companies
CRPF: 120
BSF: 65
CISF: 16
ITBP: 20
SSB: 19
The remaining 120 companies are scheduled to arrive by March 10.
Purpose Of Early Deployment
According to the communication, the forces will be deployed for:
Area domination
Confidence-building measures
Poll-day related duties
Security of EVMs and strong rooms
Security at counting centres
Key Operational Instructions
The CRPF will coordinate the movement and deployment of all CAPFs.
Of nine sections in each company, eight will be deployed at polling stations and for election-related duties, while one section will be kept for Quick Reaction Team (QRT) and supervisory responsibilities.
Each company must have a minimum strength of 72 personnel.
Daily Situation Reports (SITREP) on force movement must be sent to the MHA starting February 27, 2026.
Special trains and coaches will be arranged in coordination with the Railway Board.
The state government has been directed to ensure transportation, logistics, and accommodation for the deployed forces.
Coordination Mechanism
Sanjay Yadav, IG, CRPF West Bengal Sector, has been appointed as the state force coordinator for the assembly elections. Movement and logistical arrangements will be carried out in coordination with central forces, the Railway Board, and state authorities.
