The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is India’s highest-ranked institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, placed at =254 globally with an overall score of 57.0.
IISc was in the 201–250 band in the 2026 rankings. THE has changed its ranking structure this year, extending individual ranks further down the table before moving to broader bands.

India has three institutions in the global top 500 this year — IISc, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences. This is down from four in the 2026 rankings, with Jamia Millia Islamia moving from the 401–500 band to 501–550.No Indian institution features in the global top 200 in the 2027 rankings.
Saveetha has moved up to the 326–350 band from 351–400, while Shoolini is placed in the 451–500 band after being in the 401–500 band previously. Because THE has introduced more granular ranking positions this year, movements across editions need to be read alongside the changes in its ranking structure.
Jamia Millia Islamia is now in the 501–550 band, while KIIT University and Lovely Professional University are also placed in the same band.
Among other prominent Indian institutions, Banaras Hindu University is in the 551–600 band, while Aligarh Muslim University is in the 651–700 band. IIT Indore is also placed in the 651–700 band.
THE has ranked 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories in its 2027 edition. India is the second most represented country in the rankings, with 143 institutions included.
