I have a confession: I used to think of watches as something you wore because you needed to know the time. Now, I treat them as part of the outfit.
There are days when I’m wearing jeans and a basic tee, and a watch is the one thing that makes the whole look feel finished. Then there are office days when a structured watch instantly makes trousers and a shirt look more polished. And with ethnicwear, I love how the right watch can add a contemporary touch without competing with the jewellery.
The funny thing is that I don’t think you need a different watch for every outfit. In fact, I’ve found myself reaching for a small rotation of styles again and again because they work with almost everything I already own.
My rule: if I can wear it with jeans and a kurta, it’s a winner
The most useful watches in my wardrobe aren’t necessarily the loudest ones. They’re the ones that disappear into an outfit when I want them to and become a subtle styling detail when I don’t.
A clean analogue watch works beautifully with officewear, but it can also make a casual outfit feel more intentional. A minimal black strap works with monochrome looks, denim and even dresses. And when I’m wearing something more colourful, I usually prefer a watch that doesn’t fight with the rest of the outfit.
I’ve also realised that the size of the dial matters more than I thought. Oversized watches can make a simple outfit feel more contemporary, while smaller, cleaner dials work particularly well when I’m already wearing statement jewellery.
The watch I reach for when I’m running late
You know those mornings when there is absolutely no time to think about accessories?
That’s when a versatile everyday watch earns its place.
I tend to reach for something with a clean dial and uncomplicated detailing because it works with almost anything. Jeans, a shirt, a co-ord, a kurta—the watch doesn’t need the outfit to be carefully planned.
And honestly, that’s what makes a great everyday watch. It should make getting dressed easier, not give you another decision to make.
For office outfits, I like a little structure
When I’m wearing tailored trousers, a crisp shirt or a blazer, I usually prefer watches that have a slightly more polished finish.
There’s something about a structured watch paired with tailoring that makes an outfit look more considered. You don’t necessarily need chunky jewellery or a statement bag; sometimes a watch, small earrings and a good pair of shoes are enough.
This is also where metallic finishes work particularly well for me. They add just enough shine without making the outfit feel overdressed.
With Indianwear, I don’t always want a traditional watch
This is probably one of my favourite ways to style a watch.
If I’m wearing a kurta set or saree with traditional jewellery, I don’t necessarily want another overtly ethnic accessory competing for attention. A sleek contemporary watch can actually make the entire outfit feel fresher.
Think silver-toned watch + cotton kurta + jhumkas, or a classic watch with a saree and minimal jewellery.
The contrast is what makes it interesting.
And yes, watches can make casual outfits look expensive
This is my favourite little styling trick.
Take the most basic combination: straight-leg jeans, a fitted top and sneakers. Add sunglasses, a structured bag and a good-looking watch, and suddenly the outfit feels much more intentional.
The watch doesn’t have to be expensive. What matters is the proportion, finish and how well it works with the rest of the outfit.
That’s also why I prefer having a few versatile watches rather than collecting styles I’ll only wear once in a while.

Rather than buying a watch simply because it’s trending, I’d choose based on the outfits I actually wear. A versatile collection could include one classic analogue style, one everyday minimalist option, one slightly sportier design, and a couple of statement pieces for when you want the accessory to do more of the talking.
