Leaving a Rs 25 lakh annual corporate job for an uncertain business venture is a decision that comes with plenty of risks. For Kamal Tolani, however, the desire to build something of his own became stronger than the comfort of a stable salary. Tolani recently quit his Rs 25 LPA corporate job to start an e-commerce business. A month into his new journey, he has shared the results of his first 30 days, revealing that he made a total of Rs 48,582 through sales on Amazon, Meesho and Flipkart.Sharing an update on Instagram, Tolani wrote, “I quit my 25 LPA corporate job to build something of my own. And today, I’ve completed my first month of e-commerce sales.” His first-month earnings came largely from Amazon. According to the figures he shared, he made Rs 45,382 on Amazon, while Meesho contributed Rs 3,200. He did not record any earnings through Flipkart during the period. While the amount may be modest compared with the salary he left behind, Tolani appears to be treating the first month as the beginning of a much longer experiment rather than as a measure of immediate success.
From a stable salary to building a business
For Tolani, the decision to leave his corporate job was not simply about escaping employment. It was about finding out what could happen if he gave himself an opportunity to build something independently. “Leaving a stable corporate job wasn’t an easy decision. The salary was good, the job was secure, but I kept wondering what would happen if I actually gave myself a chance to build something of my own,” he said. The transition has also changed his everyday routine. Instead of following a fixed corporate schedule, Tolani now spends his time dealing with the many moving parts of an online business. His first month involved working with products, processing orders, managing advertisements and handling returns. He also admitted that mistakes have been part of the learning process as he tries to understand what works for his business and what does not. In a recent video, he shared a glimpse of his first 30 days, including his sales performance across the three major e-commerce platforms. The figures show a clear difference between the platforms, with Amazon accounting for almost all of his first-month revenue.
‘Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn’t’
Despite leaving behind a well-paying job, Tolani does not claim to know exactly where his new path will lead. Instead, he wants to openly document the process and share both the successful and difficult moments. “I honestly don’t know where this decision will take me. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn’t. But I want to document the journey, the uncertainty, everyday life, business, failures, small wins and everything in between,” he said. His approach has received encouragement from people online, with several users asking him to stay consistent and continue building the business. One user wrote, “Bro, hold on! Soon you will cross 25 crore sales in a month. You have just started; you have a long way to go.” Another commented, “All the very best and congratulations on your new journey, man.” A third user offered a different perspective on his numbers, writing, “Bro, congrats, but please, 350 is not a high ASP! High ASP is called 1500 to 2k per unit. 350 is the ASP where people don’t even bother to return.”For now, Tolani’s first month has given him an early look at the challenges of running an e-commerce business. After giving up a Rs 25 LPA salary, he is now choosing to measure his journey not just by immediate earnings but also by what he can learn and build over time. His first-month revenue of Rs 48,582 is only an early number, but for Tolani, the bigger milestone appears to be that he finally took the chance he had been thinking about and started building something of his own.
