Patna: With Independence Day just around the corner, markets have begun wearing a distinctly patriotic look, with tricolour flags, badges, balloons, ribbons, wristbands and sashes filling shops across the city. From roadside stalls to stationery and gift shops, sellers are witnessing increased demand for products ahead of August 15 celebrations.Schools, offices, residential societies and local organisations are purchasing ribbons, sashes and flags in bulk for Independence Day programmes. “People have started coming in large numbers over the past few days. Children mostly ask for badges, balloons and wristbands, while schools and organisations are buying flags and ribbons in bulk,” said Ashok Kumar, a shopkeeper at Boring Canal Road.Another seller, Mohd Saquib near Patna high court said the demand is expected to rise on August 14. “Every year, there is a rush just before Independence Day. This time also, customers are looking for different types of tricolour items. The flag, all made of satin, ranged from Rs 5 to Rs 300, depending on the size. The largest one is of 6/4 foot. Badges, sashes, dupatta, rings, bands, ribbons, clothes are also in demand,” he said.Markets around Patna are also seeing customers picking up decorative items to adorn homes, vehicles and shops. Sellers said the festive atmosphere has brought a noticeable rise in footfall compared with normal days.Ramesh Chaudhary, manager of Khadi Mall, said on average 1 to 1.5 lakh tricolours and other I-Day related items are being sold at the shops in the mall. “Flags are made of pure cotton and khadi cloth, while kurta-pyjama, Gandhi topi (cap), tricolour printed sari and dupatta are also in demand,” he told this newspaper.Meanwhile, security arrangements have been tightened around Gandhi Maidan, the main venue for the Independence Day celebrations in the city. Police and security personnel have increased surveillance in and around the area, while checks are being conducted at important entry and exit points. Traffic arrangements are also being monitored to ensure smooth movement during the celebrations.The administration is expected to maintain strict security around the venue on August 15, with restrictions and diversions will be implemented on roads leading towards Gandhi Maidan from 7am till the end of programme. The final dress rehearsal was concluded at the venue on Thursday, while the tableaux are being given the final touches by the artistes before the celebration.
