Ahmedabad: The detection of crime branch (DCB) has arrested a man for allegedly planning an acid attack on his estranged wife. The accused was apprehended while attempting to flee the city, officials said on Saturday. The victim, a resident of the Nikol area, sustained injuries to her lips and eyes after an unidentified biker allegedly threw a corrosive substance at her on the evening of March 27. The incident occurred near Neelkamal Society, close to Naroda Galaxy, as she was returning home from her workplace, a showroom near the Naroda railway crossing. According to police, the attacker approached the victim on a motorcycle, flung an acid-like substance at her, and sped away. Locals rushed to her help after hearing her screams and immediately shifted her to Civil Hospital. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she was later transferred to M&J Eye Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. The victim initially lodged a complaint with the police against an unidentified person under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing grievous hurt using acid. In her statement, she said suspicion initially fell on her father due to longstanding family disputes. She told police that her father had been living separately for nearly 13 years and had opposed her marriage, which took place in 2023 against his wishes. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn after the cops uncovered evidence pointing towards her husband’s involvement. Police said the couple had been facing marital discord for the past six months, following which the victim had moved back to her maternal home. Using human intelligence and technical surveillance, DCB teams traced her husband’s movements and detained him while he was allegedly attempting to escape Ahmedabad. He was subsequently arrested for allegedly orchestrating the attack. Officials also noted that the father had earlier attacked the husband two years ago, leading to a police complaint at Nikol police station, which initially strengthened suspicions against him. The case has triggered widespread outrage, particularly as it involves an inter-caste marriage. Police said further investigation is underway to identify the biker involved and to examine whether earlier incidents were linked to the marriage.
