Mysuru: Activists of the Karnataka State Samyuktha Vasathi Nilayagala Karmikara Sangha, affiliated with the All India United Trade Union Congress (AIUTUC), staged a protest outside the zilla panchayat office in Mysuru on Monday, demanding implementation of the revised minimum wages announced by the state govt for contractual employees working in govt-run hostels. The protesters accused the govt of failing to extend the revised wages despite issuing an order in this regard. They pointed out that the revised minimum wage structure for hostel employees in institutions run by the social welfare, backward classes and minorities welfare departments, as well as residential and Ashram schools, came into effect on May 22. However, the enhanced wages are yet to be disbursed, they alleged. The activists also claimed that contractual hostel employees have not received their salaries for the past five months from the social welfare and tribal welfare departments. They urged the govt to immediately release the pending wages.Among their other demands, the protesters called for the provision of sick leave, casual leave and other statutory benefits to outsourced hostel workers. They also insisted that contractors and outsourcing agencies ensure timely remittance of provident fund and ESI contributions. The union further condemned the practice of removing outsourced staff from service on trivial grounds and demanded job security for hostel workers.
