AAP MP Swati Maliwal has raised the issue of the hospital-insurance nexus in Parliament , calling for sweeping regulatory reforms to protect patients from what she described as a system designed to exploit them. Citing IRDAI data, Maliwal said Rs 26,000 crore worth of insurance claims were rejected in 2024, pushing crores of Indians into financial distress. Maliwal flagged that most large Indian hospitals and insurance companies have been acquired by foreign private equity, which she said treats patients as raw material to generate 25% returns within 3-5 years. She also raised the case of a company that holds 93% of India’s online insurance market now investing in hospitals, with no regulatory wall separating the insurer from the provider.
