The Himachal Pradesh government on Thursday notified the revised rates of entry tax on certain categories of vehicles. The rates were rationalised following massive protests in the border areas of Himachal and Punjab.

Earlier during the day, chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had said that the state government would issue a notification on revised entry tax and toll provisions by the evening.

Speaking to media on Thursday after assembly session, Sukhu said light commercial vehicles such as pickups, small goods carriers (“Chhota Hathi”), and three-wheelers registered in Himachal Pradesh have been exempted from toll. “We have exempted light commercial vehicles like pickups and three-wheelers from toll to provide relief to local operators,” he said.

The CM added that entry tax for six-tyre trucks has been reduced and retained at 320, in line with last year’s rates. Similarly, rates for multi-axle vehicles—including 10, 12, 14 and 16-tyre trucks—have been reduced and kept at 570.

“In addition, we have reduced the entry tax for light passenger vehicles coming from other states from 130 to 100,” he said.

Questioning the protests reported from some border areas, Sukhu said there was no reason for agitation. “I don’t understand why protests are taking place,” he said.
