Bhubaneswar: The mangrove forest division (wildlife), Rajnagar, in response to rising floodwaters in Brahmani, Mahanadi, and Baitarani river systems, has activated an emergency WhatsApp helpline (9938914101) and initiated a door-to-door awareness campaign to reduce human-crocodile conflict.According to a communication from the state wildlife headquarters, floodwaters often push estuarine crocodiles closer to human settlements and frequently used riverbanks, increasing the risk of accidental encounters. To address this, frontline forest staff have begun visiting flood-prone villages to educate communities on precautionary measures. “This is aimed at preventing accidental encounters with crocodiles,” the communication stated.Residents have been advised to avoid rivers, canals, creeks, and riverbanks unless absolutely necessary during flood season. They are urged to remain cautious while collecting water, fishing, or bathing. Wildlife officials have also stressed the importance of keeping children away from water bodies without adult supervision and preventing livestock from grazing or drinking at crocodile-prone locations. Any sightings of estuarine crocodiles near residential areas or water bodies should be reported immediately through the helpline.The awareness drive involves collaboration among forest personnel, local communities, and village stakeholders, aiming to promote safe coexistence and minimising conflict. Authorities hope these proactive measures would safeguard vulnerable populations during floods.
