Dibrugarh: Floodwaters have marooned families and swallowed roads across Sivasagar and Charaideo, but volunteers are battling through Assam’s devastation with food, water and hope. For five consecutive days, Global Sikhs teams have waded through waterlogged villages, ferried supplies by boat and cleared mud-choked homes in the two upper Assam districts. They have distributed emergency food packets, drinking water and women’s hygiene kits in settlements cut off by rising water. Pickup trucks cover partially submerged roads, while boats carry aid to remote hamlets.“Our volunteers have not stopped for five days because the people here cannot afford for us to stop. When you see mothers and children cut off from clean water and basic supplies, there is no question of taking a break. We go wherever the boats can take us,” a Global Sikhs coordinator overseeing relief operations in Sivasagar said Thursday.Global Sikhs and Sivasagar’s Shri Guru Singh Sabha are running langars for displaced families and mobile charging stations amid prolonged power cuts. Volunteers from the Sabha’s Dibrugarh gurdwara have widened the support network. Teams are also removing mud, sludge and debris from homes and public spaces.“The scale of destruction is immense, but so is the spirit of cooperation we’ve seen on the ground. Working alongside Global Sikhs, we’ve been able to feed hundreds of families every day who would otherwise have gone hungry,” a Shri Guru Singh Sabha volunteer in Sivasagar said.Aashray Foundation and Sachkhand Foundation, both from Delhi, and Assam’s Serving Happiness are also using boats in Sivasagar and Charaideo. Haryana’s Har Maidaan Fateh Society has sent volunteers from Yamuna Nagar on a 2,500-km journey to upper Assam. With water yet to recede in several areas, aid groups say the next few days are critical. Global Sikhs said its volunteers would remain as long as needed.
