Kolkata: Calcutta HC on Friday allowed BJP to hold its ‘Parivartan Yatra‘ in the state on March 1 and 2. While granting permission, the HC said organisers must ensure that no provocative speeches are made during the yatra and gatherers should not exceed 1,000.Justice Suvra Ghosh observed: “It is not in dispute that the right of assembly is a fundamental right of the citizen flowing from Article 19 of the Constitution. Though the application has been made on behalf of a particular political dispensation, the dispensation comprises individuals who are undoubtedly citizens.”The state govt had refused permission for the yatra on grounds that it would be difficult to provide adequate security amid the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.Justice Suvra Ghosh allowed meetings to be held between 2pm and 6pm across nine locations. In tandem with guidelines issued for other public meetings and rallies, the HC directed the state govt to ensure adequate deployment of police personnel. The court told organisers that no public property should be vandalised or any cops harmed. BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in Bengal will start in nine divisions and cover 5,000 kilometres culminating in a mega rally at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds.
