Hazaribag: A 26-year-old man was arrested in Hazaribag district on Wednesday for allegedly abducting and killing an 11-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother on May 27, after she resisted his attempts to sexually assault her, police said.The accused was arrested following a probe led by a special investigation team (SIT), Hazaribag SP Aman Kumar said on Wednesday. Police said the accused worked in an automobile showroom and was known to the girl.The children’s father, a toy vendor, had filed a missing complaint on May 30, three days after the siblings disappeared near the showroom. The family, who hail from Uttar Pradesh, have been living in the district for the past four years.The SP said that the accused took the children on his scooter on May 27 on the pretext of offering food and a mobile phone. Once they reached the banks of a river, he allegedly attempted to sexually assault the girl. When she resisted, he strangled her to death. He later killed her brother too and disposed of both bodies.The girl’s body was recovered from the ghat area on May 31, while the toddler’s body was found in a well on June 1. “During investigation, police analysed CCTV footage and technical evidence to track the accused,” said Kumar.Police also recovered the scooter and a plastic sack from the house of the accused.A large police team, including SDPO Amit Anand, DSP (headquarters) Gyan Ranjan and OCs of several police stations, was involved in the operation.
