Chandigarh: After the success of a pilot at Ambala Jail, Haryana is set to take its battle against unauthorised prison communications statewide, with plans to deploy a tower-based system to block illegal mobile phones inside its jails.The prisons department is now assessing the technical feasibility of extending the Tower Harmonics Call Blocking System to other facilities.The technology has been found effective in restricting calls and internet access through unauthorised mobile phones during its Ambala trial.prisons, cooperation, tourism and elections minister Dr Arvind Sharma said the govt would make maximum use of modern technology to strengthen prison security.Under the system, specialised towers installed inside prison premises can identify and control targeted mobile devices, preventing them from being used for calls or internet access.Unlike conventional mobile jammers, the system does not require blanket disruption of mobile networks around the prison. This is expected to allow authorities to target unauthorised devices while limiting collateral disruption to legitimate connectivity outside the premises.The move comes amid a broader effort to combine technology with physical searches and existing surveillance mechanisms in jails.
