Bathinda: A 30-year-old Punjabi cab driver has been shot dead in North Battleford town of Saskatchewan province in Canada. Devinder Singh was waiting outside a motel to pick up a woman passenger on Friday morning when a man following her opened fire, fatally injuring him, his family in Punjab said.Devinder Singh, a native of Daulatpura Neewan village in Punjab’s Moga district, had moved to Canada nearly four years ago to join his wife. He worked as a driver with local taxi company Crown Cab and also ran a café with his wife. The couple had married about six years ago and had no children.Local police have termed the incident a homicide and launched an investigation.Devinder’s cousin Gurjant Singh told TOI that, according to his wife, Devinder had received a call from a woman at a motel requesting a ride on Friday morning. “He reached the motel and was waiting in the cab when the woman rushed out. A man chasing her fired at her, but the bullet hit Devinder. He later succumbed to the injury,” Gurjant said.According to reports from Canada, Battlefords RCMP received a call about an injured man in a parking lot off a highway around 7.45am on Friday. When police arrived, the man was declared dead at the scene by emergency responders. The RCMP’s major crimes unit is investigating the killing.
