Ahmedabad: In a major push to modernise school education, the state education department has announced a comprehensive revision of textbooks for the academic year 2026–27, introducing sweeping changes from primary to higher secondary levels. As part of the reform, 32 textbooks across Gujarati and English mediums will be completely revised, with a focus on core subjects such as languages, mathematics, and science and technology.A key highlight of the revamp is the introduction of contemporary subjects like artificial intelligence (AI) and programming languages, particularly for higher classes. The initiative aims to align classroom learning with rapidly evolving technological trends and equip students with future-ready skills.Officials said textbook revision was a routine exercise undertaken to keep academic content updated and relevant. However, the upcoming changes are significant, especially for Classes 9 and 11, whose textbooks are being replaced after nearly 13 years. The last revision for these classes was carried out in 2013–14, making this update one of the most extensive in recent years. At the primary level, several new textbooks have been introduced to enhance foundational learning. These include “Vachanmala” for Gujarati in Class 2, and “Maths Melo” and “Our Wonderful World” for Class 3. For middle school students, Class 6 will see updated editions such as “Maths Prakash” and the science book “Kautuhal.”Alongside academic updates, the department has also emphasised value-based education, incorporating lessons inspired by the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita into the curriculum for Classes 7 and 8.
