Ahmedabad: The state education department has announced a mega recruitment drive for around 11,000 vidyasahayaks (primary teachers) for govt primary schools (Classes 1 to 5) under district and municipal primary education committees. The drive is specifically for Gujarati-medium schools. This announcement may come as good news for candidates who have cleared TET-1.
The notification by the Gujarat State Primary Education Selection Committee states that eligible candidates can register online for the recruitment process starting April 15, with the deadline being April 24. Candidates have been asked to submit their applications at designated acceptance centres.
The recruitment aims to address the shortage of primary teachers in various districts. The entire process will be conducted online for transparency and efficiency, and selection will be solely on merit. After the merit list is prepared, candidates will be allotted districts based on availability and preferences.
Candidates who have passed TET-1 and are currently in the final year of diploma in elementary education (D.El.Ed) are eligible to apply. This provision allows aspiring teachers to participate in the recruitment process even before they complete their final certification.
Out of the total 11,000 vacancies, 5,000 are pending recruitments from 2025, while 6,000 were approved for 2026 under the state govt’s 10-year recruitment calendar, making this recruitment drive one of the largest for primary teachers in recent years.
In 2024, the state had successfully completed recruitments for 3,852 teaching posts for Classes 1 to 8 in various mediums. Additionally, a special recruitment drive in 2025 filled 2,500 posts in the Kutch district.
Officials stated that the recruitment process will be completed in a time-bound and transparent manner, ensuring that vacant positions are filled at the earliest.
Education experts believe that this large-scale hiring will significantly improve the quality of primary education by reducing teacher shortages and strengthening the academic environment in schools across the state.
