Ahmedabad: A total of 1,966 cattle owners in the Gir area of Amreli district received compensation of Rs 1.43 crore for cattle killed by lions, leopards and other wild animals, the Gujarat govt informed the assembly on Wednesday.Forest minister Arjun Modhwadia shared the figures while replying to a question raised by Savarkundla MLA Mahesh Kaswala. The compensation was paid to owners who lost cattle in wildlife attacks in the Gir region, where incidents involving lions and leopards are frequently reported.According to the data presented, 920 cattle owners were paid Rs 67.91 lakh during the 2023 calendar year. In 2025, the number rose to 965 cattle owners, who received Rs 69.40 lakh, marking an increase of 4.9% compared to 2023. In Jan 2025 alone, 81 cattle owners were paid Rs 5.50 lakh as compensation.The govt said compensation norms provide for a maximum payment of Rs 50,000 in cases of cow and buffalo deaths, while up to Rs 40,000 is paid for camel deaths caused by wild animal attacks.
