Chennai: A 31-year-old guest worker from Assam died and another worker suffered injuries after a material-lifting hoist trolley fell from the fifth floor of a building under construction on Taramani Link Road on Friday evening.The deceased was identified as Ashraful Alam, 31, a native of Bongaigaon district in Assam. He had been living in Chennai for the past five years and was employed at the construction site for the past 15 days.The six-storey building was under construction at the site of a working women’s hostel in Taramani. A hoist trolley was being used to transport cement, sand and other building materials from the ground floor to the upper levels.

Around 5.30pm, the rope supporting the trolley snapped, causing it to fall from the fifth floor.The falling trolley struck Ashraful Alam and another worker, Ishrail, 32, who were bathing near the building at the time.Both victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared Ashraful Alam dead on arrival. Ishrail, who was injured to his arm, was later shifted to Govt Royapettah Hospital. The body of Ashraful Alam was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Govt General Hospital for post-mortem.Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased man’s brother-in-law, Manijul Houque, the Taramani police registered a case under Sections 106(1) and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
