Imposing caps on retail fuel sales is not acceptable and the government will take up the matter with private oil-marketing companies, Petroleum Ministry Secretary Neeraj Mittal told reporters in response to queries over diesel purchase limits imposed by private retailers Jio-bp and Nayara Energy.

“Nobody is allowed to put a cap on sales. We will take it up with them and tell them it is not acceptable,” Mr. Mittal said. “In the past also, letters have been issued and instructions have been issued. The same thing applies even today; there is no change in the government’s view on this.”

Press reports earlier this week suggested that Jio-bp outlets had capped diesel purchases at 50 litres per customer per day. At Nayara Energy outlets, the reported limits ranged from 70 litres to 200 litres.
