Govt school in soup as video of students assaulting classmate goes viral

Chennai: The Pallipattu Govt Higher Secondary School in Tirutanni has landed in the soup after a video of a group of students physically and verbally assaulting a fellow student surfaced on social media. The attackers, who were all in school uniforms, were seen pinning the student to the wall, slapping him repeatedly and removing his watch, reportedly under the influence of drugs. The incident comes barely a week after a student was found attacking a classmate in front of the teachers in Madurai and a Class XII student was beaten to death by his schoolmates in Tiruvottiyur.Tiruvallur chief education officer R Arivazhagan, however, denied that the students were under the influence of drugs and said the issue was at least three weeks old. “The HM sought a voluntary transfer after the incident. The quarrel was over an Instagram post by the victim. The students were neither under the influence of drugs nor tobacco. We had informed their parents and took an undertaking from them that they wouldn’t repeat such offences,” he said.Tiruvallur district collector S Kavitha visited the school on Wednesday and interacted with the students. “The students regret the incident. We will look into issuing a show-cause notice to the school to check whether they handled it the right manner,” she said.
