Srinagar, Sep 27: The Department of Travel & Tourism, Government Polytechnic for Women Srinagar, celebrated World Tourism Day 2026 with enthusiasm and active participation from students and faculty members.
The programme highlighted the significance of tourism in promoting cultural understanding, sustainable development, employment generation, and the preservation of local heritage. Students of the Department of Travel & Tourism presented a range of engaging activities, including a speech competition, skit, cultural programmes, and poetry presentations.
The event was graced by Mr. Sameer Baktoo, President, Travel Agents Association of India (J&K Chapter), and President, Ecotourism Society of Kashmir. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sameer Baktoo said, “that tourism plays a vital role in promoting cultural exchange, generating employment, supporting local communities, and strengthening the regional economy. He emphasised the need to promote responsible and sustainable tourism while preserving the rich cultural and natural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. He also encouraged the students to acquire professional skills, remain innovative, and explore emerging opportunities in the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors.”
The presentations by the students reflected their creativity, confidence, and understanding of the importance of tourism in the socio-economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. The programme also provided a meaningful platform for students to express their views on responsible, inclusive, and sustainable tourism.
Er. Imtiaz Ahmad, Principal, Government Polytechnic for Women Srinagar, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Travel & Tourism, faculty members, and students for successfully organising the celebration. He emphasised the importance of experiential learning and encouraged the students to continue developing their skills for meaningful careers in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Rukhsana Bashir, Head of the Department of Travel & Tourism, also addressed the gathering. She highlighted the importance of World Tourism Day and stressed the role of students in promoting responsible tourism, preserving local heritage, and contributing to the sustainable development of the tourism sector. She appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students and acknowledged the efforts of the faculty members in making the programme successful.
The event concluded with a pledge-taking ceremony, followed by the distribution of certificates among the participating students in recognition of their active involvement and contribution to the programme.
