Chennai: The railway protection force (RPF) personnel seized unaccounted cash and gold worth 58.19 lakh from passengers at Perambur and Chennai Egmore railway stations in two separate operations.At Perambur railway station, RPF personnel intercepted Rupa Ram, 39, of Rajasthan when he alighted from the Sangamitra Express stationed in Perambur. A search of his baggage revealed 9.2 lakh in cash. He said the cash was a part of his hardware business, but was unable to produce supporting documents. The cash was confiscated.In a separate incident at Perambur, officials conducted a routine check on passengers at the platform and intercepted Dinesh Kumar, 43, from Tirupattur district. A search of his luggage revealed 6 lakh in cash and 237g of gold bars with an estimated market value of 35.45 lakh. Kumar stated the items belonged to his jewellery shop in Tirupattur, but he failed to produce valid documents for the possession of valuables and cash. The gold and cash were seized.In another incident at Chennai Egmore railway station, a team noticed a man disembarked from Howrah-Kanyakumari Express and behaved suspiciously. When stopped and inquired, Chota Ram Kadav, 25, from Jodhpur district in Rajasthan was found to be carrying cash totalling 7.54 lakh. As he did not have documents for the money, it was handed over to the income tax department. All seized items, totalling 22.74 lakh in cash and gold bars worth 35.45 lakh, were handed over to the income tax department for further investigation. TNN
