Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) remains hopeful that the civic body’s vertical gardening initiative on two flyovers in the city will be completed before Durga Puja this year.The initiative aims to improve the visual appeal of key stretches of the city and add greenery to its busy road infrastructure.“Work is underway on four flyovers in the city. However, we are hopeful that the vertical gardens on the Sraddhanjali Flyover, located on RG Baruah Road, and the Bhagadutta Flyover-I in the Supermarket area will be completed before Puja, so that they can be our gift to the public,” said GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania.The civic body has identified 20 flyovers under its vertical garden project, which is aimed at tackling air pollution while making the city’s utilitarian structures greener and more visually appealing.Officials said the initiative was part of the corporation’s broader efforts to expand urban greenery and improve the city’s environment.Before introducing the vertical garden concept, GMC had undertaken several greening measures, including placing flower pots along road dividers and major roads and installing plant tubs along flyover edges using mesh-wire fencing.The project, estimated to cost around Rs 25 crore, is intended to enhance greenery and contribute to a cleaner urban environment.
