Mumbai: Gleneagles Hospital has partnered with Medtronic India to launch a specialised Renal Denervation Therapy Centre at its Parel facility to treat patients with resistant hypertension.

The hospital said the centre is designed to provide structured assessment, expert-led treatment and long-term follow-up for patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite taking multiple medications.

The facility will offer detailed clinical evaluation, patient counselling, medication optimisation and access to renal denervation therapy for eligible patients. It aims to improve blood pressure control and reduce the risk of heart, brain and kidney complications linked to uncontrolled hypertension.

The centre will be led by Dr Rahul Gupta, Director and Cardiologist; Dr Bharat Shah, Director and Nephrologist; Dr V M Reddy, Senior Consultant Cardiologist; and Dr Prashant Rajput, Senior Consultant Nephrologist.

Hypertension cases are rising steadily due to lifestyle factors such as stress, unhealthy diets, obesity and physical inactivity. Despite the availability of medicines, many patients struggle to achieve adequate blood pressure control because of delayed diagnosis, irregular follow-ups and poor awareness. In some cases, blood pressure remains high even after multiple drugs — a condition referred to as resistant hypertension.

According to the hospital, the new centre will bring together cardiologists, nephrologists and internal medicine specialists to offer coordinated and personalised care pathways. In addition to interventional therapy, the team will focus on lifestyle counselling, medication management and regular monitoring to ensure sustained blood pressure control.

Dr Rahul Gupta said resistant hypertension significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure, and renal denervation therapy offers an additional treatment option for carefully selected patients whose blood pressure does not respond to medicines alone.

Dr Bharat Shah said long-standing uncontrolled hypertension can damage kidney function and lead to chronic kidney disease, adding that the specialised centre would help identify high-risk patients early and provide multidisciplinary care.

Dr Bipin Chevale, CEO of the hospital, said the collaboration with Medtronic would help adopt a more structured approach to resistant hypertension management by integrating clinical expertise with advanced technology.

Mandeep Singh Kumar, Managing Director and Vice President, Medtronic India, said the partnership aims to strengthen awareness, improve diagnosis and support better long-term outcomes for patients with complex and resistant hypertension.
