Bokaro: A day after a 14-year-old girl delivered a baby in the bathroom of a govt hospital in Giridih, police on Saturday arrested a 24-year-old man accused of making her pregnant.Hospital staff alerted police on Saturday morning when the girl’s family allegedly attempted to abandon the newborn and flee. Both the mother and baby have now been shifted to a mother and child unit for treatment.Officials said the girl had arrived at the hospital with her family members on Friday evening. Soon after reaching the hospital, she went to the bathroom, where she went into labour and delivered a baby girl. Hospital staff rushed to the bathroom after learning about the delivery and safely brought both the mother and newborn out.“The family members allegedly attempted to leave the hospital abandoning the newborn due to fear of social stigma. However, hospital staff immediately informed the police. Police prevented the family from leaving without the baby. Both the mother and newborn were later shifted by ambulance to another healthcare centre. Both are healthy and under medical supervision,” said hospital superintendent Dr Pradeep Baitha.Giridih SP Bimal Kumar has directed Sadar SDPO Jeetvahan Oraon to conduct an investigation. Oraon told TOI, “Police have arrested a man for allegedly making her pregnant. The accused was taken into custody and would be produced before a local court.”The SDPO also said that the girl’s statement was recorded by a woman police officer. Further investigation is underway.
