Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Institute of Prisons and Correctional Administration (GIPCA) campus in Ahmedabad is set to get modern sports grounds, with the state police department planning the facilities keeping in mind the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, and the Olympics for which India has made a formal bid to host.Quoting DGP crime K L N Rao, an official statement on Sunday said that sports play an important role not only in improving physical fitness but also in developing discipline and team spirit. He said the GIPCA campus was undergoing an advanced revamp under Phase I by Police Housing Corporation.Once completed, the revamped campus will have modern training facilities, including smart classrooms, computer labs and a library for personnel ranging from jail assistants to deputy superintendents. “Sports grounds for various disciplines are also being developed at the campus, keeping the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and the aim to host the 2036 Olympics,” the statement quoted the officer as saying.The jail department also emerged as the overall champion in the DGP Cup 2026-27 Gujarat Police Wrestling Cluster Competition, held at the Nadiad Sports Complex, the statement said. As many as 22 teams from across Gujarat participated in the competition.Jail department wrestlers put up a strong show, winning six gold, six silver and two bronze medals, taking their overall tally to 14 medals and securing the champion’s trophy. Rao congratulated the players for their performance.Meanwhile, the selection process for the upcoming Gujarat Police DGP Cup Kabaddi (men) 2026-27 has been completed, with promising players shortlisted from various jails and GIPCA, the statement added.
