Agartala: Tripura’s agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Sunday that German buyers have placed orders for 500 metric tonnes of organic ginger and 20 metric tonnes of bird’s eye chilli following his participation at BIOFACH 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany.Nath said the buyers expressed keen interest in visiting Tripura after experiencing its organic produce at the global trade fair, held from Feb 10-13. He emphasised the importance of showcasing Tripura’s organic farming achievements at an event that drew participants from across the world.

The conference, organised by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the ministry of commerce and industries, highlighted India’s growing role in promoting organic farming internationally. Nath said APEDA’s ambitious target of raising India’s share of global organic food exports from 2.5% to nearly 12% within five years, adding that Tripura is well-positioned to contribute to this vision.He said Tripura has built a strong foundation in organic farming, supported by its geography, biodiversity, and traditional agricultural practices. The state currently has 53 functioning organic farmer producer companies managing over 26,000 hectares of certified organic land, with more than 26,800 registered organic farmers.Tripura’s organic portfolio includes aromatic rice varieties, black rice, sticky rice, bird’s eye chili, sesame seeds, turmeric, ginger, pineapple, jackfruit, and other native agri-horticultural products. Nath assured that the state adheres to strict standards, traceability systems, and food safety norms to deliver authentic, high-quality organic produce.He further stressed Tripura’s commitment to enhancing value addition and strengthening market linkages to ensure fair returns for farmers while offering global consumers ethically sourced and environmentally sustainable food.Concluding his remarks, Nath invited importers, processors, retailers, researchers, and investors to collaborate with Tripura in organic sourcing, value chain development, and long-term partnerships to advance the state’s organic agriculture initiatives.
