Bengaluru: The State Election Commission (SEC) has formally kept in abeyance its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 27 wards under Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), citing Election Commission of India’s ongoing statewide revision exercise and Supreme Court’s directive on GBA elections. The exercise is neither withdrawn nor scrapped.In a July 23 order, SEC suspended the operation of its June 19 notification that had directed a ward-level SIR in 24 wards of Mahadevapura assembly constituency and three wards of Gandhinagar. The suspension will remain in force until further orders.SEC had ordered the ward-level SIR after receiving objections to the electoral rolls published on April 18.The commission said the district election officer and GBA chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao had stated the entire election machinery was deployed for ECI’s statewide SIR, making it administratively difficult to conduct a parallel revision of ward-level electoral rolls. SEC referred to Supreme Court’s July 17 order, which took note of ECI’s ongoing revision and directed that elections to the five city corporations under GBA be held by Dec 2026.SEC clarified it had not expressed any opinion on the merits of the proposed revision and reserved the right to revive the exercise or issue fresh directions after ECI completes its revision.
