Jaipur: Leading glassware manufacturer Borosil Ltd announced disruptions in its production activities at Chomu, near Jaipur, following a communication from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) regarding restrictions in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).In a filing to the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the company confirmed that operations at its borosilicate glass furnace for pressware products were temporarily suspended. Its opal glass furnaces, also located in Jaipur, are running at reduced capacity due to constrained LPG availability.Industry representatives warned that Borosil’s situation could soon spread across sectors. “Today it is Borosil, tomorrow it could be several others. If the gas supply to commercial establishments does not improve, many industrial units will bring down their shutters,” said one representative.Several ceramic units in Bhiwadi and Neemrana, where gas accounts for 30–35% of raw material costs, are also facing the threat of closure. Companies such as JCB, NBC Bearing, fertiliser plants, and several others are heavily dependent on gas to sustain operations.The shortage triggered cost pressures across the supply chain, raising raw material prices and ultimately affecting consumers. “Until the whole supply chain returns to normalcy, the cost of raw material will be costlier, affecting the end consumers,” the representative added.The crisis impacted the hospitality sector, with hotels reporting booking cancellations and events being curtailed. “Ultimately, all these will impact jobs. People will get displaced if the situation does not subside within 10 days. Companies will start firing people,” said a hotel industry representative, preferring anonymity.The unfolding disruption is not only threatening industrial and economic activity but will also displace jobs across the state.
