Berhampur: Two life convicts in Ganjam district, including a 60-year old woman, have been prematurely released from two prisons on Sunday following remission awarded to them by the State Sentence Review Board.Shantilata Pradhan (60) of Badagudiali in Kodala police station limits and Dinabandhu Altia (71) of Takarada in Buguda police station limits lodged in Berhampur circle jail and special jail, Bhanjanagar respectively walked out of jails.Pradhan and Altia were among 19 inmates lodged in 12 prisons across the state, who have been released prematurely following the board’s decision.Pradhan was housed in the circle after being awarded life conviction by the court on May 5, 2007 in a murder case. Before her premature release she had been released on bail on April 20, this year,” said DN Barik, senior superintendent, circle jail, here. The jail authorities, however, will provide other benefits, including Rs 5000 from the prison’s welfare fund to her soon, he said.Manas Samat, superintendent, special jail Bhanjanagar said Altia walked out from the jail very happily after spending over 11 years there. He was lodged in the jail after being sentenced to life on March 28, 2015 in a murder case. His daughter and other family members were coming to receive him.Besides his wages on work during the jail term, he has also received Rs 5,000 from the prisoners’ welfare fund. Altia said rest of his life would be spent with the family members and to work for the welfare of the society in his village.The jail authorities have recommended the govt through the district authorities for their premature release due to their good conduct and maintained discipline in the jails. After a detailed review of each prisoner’s conduct record and other provisions, the board has ordered for their premature release, sources said.
