BERHAMPUR: A 28-year-old man wanted in at least eight criminal cases, including murder and attempt to murder, was allegedly killed by his friend during a drunken brawl in Odisha’s Berhampur on Saturday night, police said.The incident took place in Nimakhandi when the victim, Tuna Nayak, and his friend Bitu Sahu (28), alias Raghab, along with two others, were consuming liquor.According to police, an argument broke out between Nayak and Sahu, who owns a fast-food shop. The altercation escalated after Nayak allegedly slapped Sahu.Enraged, Sahu allegedly took out a knife kept in the boot of his scooter and slit Nayak’s throat. Nayak died on the spot, Berhampur SP Abhinav Sonkar said.Sahu allegedly fled the spot on his scooter but was intercepted during a vehicle-checking drive. Police personnel became suspicious after noticing bloodstains on his clothes and detained him.“During questioning, the accused confessed to the murder,” Sonkar said.Police arrested Sahu and seized the knife allegedly used in the crime. The role of the two other men who were present at the spot is yet to be established, an officer said.A case has been registered at Nimakhandi police station and an investigation is underway. A forensic team visited the crime scene and collected evidence, police said.(With agency inputs)
