Times News NetworkKanpur: With the water level of Ganga showing a rising trend following monsoon rains, the district administration on Wednesday directed the officials to install warning signages at vulnerable locations along the river bank where the water level has increased.According to the flood control office, the water level at the Ganga Barrage was recorded at 112.500 metres upstream and 111.900 metres downstream at 8 am on Wednesday. The barrage is currently releasing water at the rate of 88,557 cusecs.The officials said that the warning level for the river has been fixed at 114.000 metres, while the danger mark stands at 115.000 metres. The present water level remains 1.50 metres below the warning level and 2.50 metres below the danger mark.The administration is closely monitoring the river’s water level and has taken precautionary measures to alert residents and visitors in areas adjoining the riverbanks. The water level at the Shuklaganj gauge was recorded at 110.510 meters, which is well below the designated warning and danger levels. He stated that the current situation is completely safe and there is no cause for concern.As part of the continuous monitoring of the Ganga’s water level in view of the monsoon, district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh inspected the flood control room at the Ganga Barrage on Wednesday and reviewed the water level and flood preparedness. He sought information from the officials regarding daily water levels, potential conditions, and relief and rescue arrangements.Later, he stated that instructions have been issued to all sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) to mandatorily install warning signs in areas where water levels have risen due to continuous rainfall. Accordingly, warning indicators have been placed at various ghats—including Parmat Ghat, Bhairav Ghat, and those in Bilhaur Tehsil and the Sadar area—as well as in locations prone to waterlogging, enabling people to identify deep-water zones and helping to prevent accidents.He appealed to the general public not to bathe in deep water during the rainy season and to follow the safety guidelines issued by the administration.The DM stated that, just like last year, the district administration remains fully vigilant and alert. For the first time, an NDRF unit will be available in Kanpur to carry out immediate relief and rescue operations in the event of any emergency, and it will be deployed instantly if the need arises.He stated that, in accordance with government directives, the district administration has completed all preparations to deal with any potential floods or disasters. Arrangements for relief materials, food, and other essential amenities have been ensured, and the tendering process for the distribution of relief kits has also been concluded.
