Prayagraj: For Sangam City, the newly constructed Ganga Expressway is poised to prove a game changer across various sectors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Ganga expressway at Hardoi on April 29, Wednesday.Spanning 594 kms—making it UP’s longest expressway—and stretching from Meerut to its terminus at Judapur in Prayagraj, the project will rapidly expand scope of tourism, industrial and agricultural sectors. Additionally, it will generate significant employment opportunities within the region.Prayagraj is renowned for its identity as a religious and spiritual hub. Coupled with its rich mythological and religious heritage, its periodic religious events like Maha Kumbh and Magh Mela, attract tourists from within the country and abroad. The recorded footfall of over 66 crore devotees during 2025 Mahakumbh and more than 22 crore during the 2026 Magh Mela have clearly underscored the immense potential for spiritual tourism in this region.Nilesh Narayan, a tour operator with ‘Holy Waters Journey,’ observes that with construction of Ganga Expressway, tourists traveling from Western UP to Prayagraj will increasingly opt for surface transport (road travel) over trains or flights. This shift will bring to light the smaller tourist spots situated along the route—many of which remain unexplored to this day. Consequently, the development of infrastructure in these areas will—much like in South India—strengthen rural tourism alongside religious tourism.Prayagraj is all set to be linked to five major religious corridors, facilitating a significant expansion of tourism. Regarding Kaushambi—although the expressway does not pass directly through the district—its proximity to the Prayagraj terminus will provide the local Buddhist tourism centres (such as Ghositaram Vihara) with direct connectivity to the international tourism circuit. Tourists traveling between Varanasi and Delhi will also be able to make convenient stopovers in the region.Construction of Ganga Expressway will not only drastically reduce travel time but also bring about transformative changes in the city’s economic and social fabric. Currently, journey from Meerut to Prayagraj takes approximately 11 to 12 hours; once the expressway is operational, this travel time is expected to be cut down to a mere 6 to 7 hours. The expressway will provide direct and rapid connectivity between Prayagraj and Delhi-NCR, passing through Western UP.Industrial clusters are being developed along the Ganga Expressway. Regional president of Eastern UP Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vinay Kumar Tandon, notes that thanks to there being no land bank shortage around Prayagraj, land for industries is readily available just a few kilometers from the district headquarters. This presents an opportunity for development of industrial clusters in the region. Farmers in and around Prayagraj will be able to transport their produce—including fruits, vegetables, and grains—to major markets like Delhi and Meerut in a significantly shorter time, enabling them to secure better prices.Pratapgarh district stands to benefit most through its agro-based industries. Its renowned ‘aamla’ (Indian gooseberry) and other products will now take only 6–7 hours to reach markets in Delhi and NCR, a development expected to double farmers’ incomes. Similarly, okra (ladyfinger) from Kaushambi, groundnuts from Fatehpur and exotic vegetables from Prayagraj will gain access to markets in major cities. This initiative will generate employment opportunities for people at the local level.eom
