Kanpur: The water level of the Ganga in Unnao rose rapidly again on Wednesday, reaching 112.11 metres—9cm above the warning level of 112.02 metres—causing concern among residents of several low-lying areas.The rise has been attributed to continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas and discharge of water from major dams. With several riverside areas already facing flooding, the further rise in the Ganga has compounded problems for residents.Around a week ago, the river had reached 112.07 metres before receding slightly. It crossed the warning level again on Monday and stood at 112.04 metres on Tuesday afternoon. The level then rose sharply, reaching 112.08 metres by 6pm. By 8am on Wednesday, it had climbed to 112.11 metres.Residents of low-lying areas including Karbala, Mansukh Kheda, Gotaakhor and Saiyyad Compound faced increasing difficulties as water entered several localities and waterlogging blocked roads at multiple places.Residents were forced to use boats arranged by the administration and wade through water for essential activities. Floodwaters also began reaching Ravidas Nagar, Malviya Nagar and Shrinagar, triggering anxiety among residents.Several houses in areas such as Gotaakhor and Karbala were affected after the water crossed the warning mark. Some families moved their belongings to rooftops as a precaution.Residents, who recalled severe flooding in the area last year, said they feared the situation could worsen if the river continued to rise at the current pace.
