Kanpur: The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) on Friday destroyed nearly 8,600 litres of expired food items worth around ₹2.32 lakh at the municipal corporation’s dumping ground in Bhauti as part of its ongoing drive against adulterated and substandard food products.Assistant food commissioner Sanjay Pratap Singh said that an FSDA team had conducted an inspection at Vishal Bharat Industries in Jajmau on June 15. The establishment is operated by food business operator Tauqir Kamal Ansari.During the inspection, the officials found a huge quantity of expired syrup, crush, sherbet and sauce stored at the premises. Singh said the persons present at the unit fled from the spot during the inspection following which the Food Safety Department immediately sealed the manufacturing unit.He further informed that on June 17, the department collected two samples of pickles in the presence of the representative of the food business operator and seized around 198 kilograms of pickles. Besides this, three samples of sauce were also collected for laboratory testing.Singh said the expired food items could not be destroyed immediately due to procedural delays and passage of time. The seized expired material was finally destroyed on Friday under official supervision.The Food Safety Department stated that strict action would continue against the manufacture, storage and sale of adulterated, substandard and expired food products.
