Bhubaneswar: A 43-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his friend in Balipatna area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Friday after the victim refused to repay a debt of Rs 20,000 to the accused.Accused, Jakir Sha, 27, of Bengabati village has been arrested.Jagmohan Meena, DCP, said prima facie, the incident appears to be an outcome of a quarrel over Rs 20,000. “The accused, who lent Rs 20,000 to victim Rakesh Kumar Dash of Athantara, assaulted him when he refused to repay the money,” Meena said.Police sources said that both men worked as small-time land brokers. The altercation reportedly broke out during a disagreement over sharing proceeds from a land deal, during which Sha allegedly attacked Dash with a blunt object. Dash was rushed to Capital Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The incident occurred close to Balianta, where a railway constable was lynched just a day ago, raising concerns about recurring violence in the area.So far this year, 17 murder cases have been registered in Bhubaneswar. Police investigations confirmed 10 as genuine murders, while the rest were found to be false.Officials emphasised that most murders are situational, often triggered by personal enmity, land disputes, grudges or sudden provocation, and do not reflect a systemic breakdown of law and order.A comparative analysis shows that while 52, 68 and 60 murder cases were registered in 2023, 2024 and 2025, respectively, the confirmed murders stood at 45, 43 and 33, indicating a declining trend despite fluctuations in reported cases.
