Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police has registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of a 31-year-old man in Sector 52 earlier this month. The case was registered after investigators analysed CCTV footage that allegedly shows two suspects transporting the victim’s body on a bicycle before abandoning it.The deceased, Deepak, a resident of Sector 52, was reported missing by his family on July 9 after he failed to return home the previous night. According to his father, Ramesh, Deepak had left the house on the night of July 8, saying he would return in five minutes. When he did not come back, the family searched for him among relatives, friends and in nearby areas before lodging a missing person complaint at the Sector 52 police beat box.Police said Deepak’s body was found outside a dispensary in Sector 52 on the morning of July 10. His family alleged that although the body was recovered around 4am, they were informed about it only around 10am. They later identified the body at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16.During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage that allegedly shows a man and a woman carrying Deepak’s body on a bicycle through a waterlogged lane before abandoning it. Based on the footage, the suspects have been identified, police said. Raids were conducted at their residences, but both were found absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest them.Deepak’s brother, Rahul, alleged that the body bore multiple injury marks, raising suspicions of foul play. However, police said the postmortem examination attributed the cause of death to a drug overdose.Officials said that despite the medical opinion, the circumstances captured in the CCTV footage prompted investigators to register a case under provisions related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The exact role of the accused and the sequence of events leading to Deepak’s death will be determined during the course of the investigation.Police said further investigation is in progress and the accused are expected to be arrested soon.
