Varanasi: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation launched a free Wi-Fi facility at the court complex on Wednesday, with mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari inaugurating the service.The civic body had earlier started the digital connectivity initiative at Assi Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat. In the second phase, free Wi-Fi was extended to BHU Hospital and Trauma Centre. With the launch at the court complex in the third phase, people can now access free high-speed Wi-Fi at five major and crowded locations in the city.The Mayor said that internet connectivity has become a basic necessity in the present era. He said the project is an important step towards making Varanasi a modern and smart city. Special boards have been installed in the Wi-Fi zones for the convenience of citizens, advocates and youth. These boards carry QR codes, which users can scan with their mobile phones to easily access the free internet service, he said.The responsibility for operating and maintaining the Wi-Fi network has been given to BSNL. Principal GM of the public sector telecom company, Anil Kumar Gupta, said the network speed and coverage have been designed to ensure smooth connectivity and uninterrupted data transfer even during heavy crowding in the court complex.
