Mangaluru: Food safety officials on Saturday inspected a chain hypermarket here following a complaint regarding the sale of an expired food product.An official from the food safety and drug administration department confirmed that the inspection was carried out at the store, and that the matter concerned a packet of a ready-made parota. The official said the inspection would continue on Sunday, and would be completed thereafter.The incident came to light after a complaint regarding the expired food product was made through the official QR code mechanism by the Karnataka health and family welfare department, following which food safety officials took up the matter for inspection.Fines imposedPanchayat development officer (PDO) Ramya has imposed fines of Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000 for dumping waste on the roadside and discharging poultry waste into a roadside drain, respectively, within the Kuppepadavu gram panchayat limits.During a visit by the information, education and communication (IEC) consultant of the district Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) to the GP on Saturday, a spot inspection was conducted personally along with panchayat staff. As the violations were discovered during the inspection, immediate action was taken by levying fines against those responsible. The public has been instructed not to indiscriminately dump waste on roadsides and in drains, and to ensure that waste is disposed of scientifically in the prescribed manner, stated a release.
